“There’s a popular saying that goes “if you want something done right, do it yourself”. However, when it comes to building my own house, I don’t follow this adage at all, even though I am a licensed contractor. Here are just a few reasons why I would never build my own home.
Stress
First of all, I don’t think I could take the stress of managing an entire construction project on my own. Coordinating multiple trades and making sure they finish on time while still meeting all building codes can be quite challenging – and there’s no way I’m up for that kind of stress. Plus, who would build the bar in the basement for me? That’s definitely best left to professionals!
Cost
Next is the question of cost: the materials for building a house are not cheap. In addition to buying thousands of dollars worth of lumber, plumbing supplies, electrical components and other items necessary to complete the project; there is also the cost of hiring someone experienced in homebuilding (preferably a licensed contractor). My pockets aren’t deep enough for that!
Hiring it out
Finally, having contractors manage the project provides some peace of mind – after all they have both experience and expertise in dealing with these types of projects every day. But those guys are expensive, and unless you do this all the time you will not know the great contractors from the fly by night aweful ones.
So when people ask me if I’d ever consider building my own house, my answer is always “No way!”” Sure it sounds fun in theory but after going through everything involved, its safe to say that constructing your own home isn’t really everyone’s cup of tea (or martini!). And that concludes why I’ll stick with purchasing an already-built house over ever constructing one myself – cheers!”
